The Indira Gandhi National Open University established in 1985 through an Act of Parliament of India, ranks as one of the premier educational institutions in the world. Within 20 years of existence, it has contributed significantly to the development of higher education in India. It has been a world leader in distance education earning the center of excellence "award" in distance education in 1993 by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). IGNOU also received the Award of Excellence for Distance Education Material" in 1999 from COL.
